CLEVELAND, Ohio — Muscle Milk may be aimed at bodybuilders and other fitness folks, but it shouldn’t surprise anyone that this highly processed supplement doesn’t contain any milk.

Its manufacturer, CytoSport, even points out that it’s great for lactose-intolerant consumers. Well, yes, in the sense that it provides a lot of protein (15 grams or more, depending on size).

When it comes to these kind of supplements, it should be said that Muscle Milk seems to be one of the better-tasting ones. A couple of years ago, while attending the annual Arnold Sports Festival in Columbus (a multisport fitness competition), a group of us sampled about 10 different brands of these liquid protein supplements, and Muscle Milk was by far the least powdery-tasting brand.

These days, I prefer whole foods to the concoctions with 20-plus chemical ingredients that pass for supplements. but that’s just me.

Several weeks ago, the Food and Drug Administration issued a warning letter to CytoSport, saying it had a problem with the use of the word “milk” in the name and that the protein drink brand’s labels could be misleading to consumers.

In a statement CytoSport released, the company noted, “We are proactively and openly addressing the FDA’s concerns,” but provided no specifics. It also noted that the FDA had not expressed any concerns about the safety of the actual Muscle Milk products.

The makers of Muscle Milk made a valid argument in the statement that echoed a complaint that the dairy lobby has made in the past: “Soy milk,” “almond milk,” “rice milk” and “coconut milk” products don’t have any milk in them either, yet producers are allowed to use the word “milk.” Not having dairy is, of course, part of their attraction to those who don’t like, or can’t drink, cow’s milk.

In the meantime, always look at a product’s label to see what it is you are drinking. aside from containing no milk, Muscle Milk is high in calories and sugar. So much so, that consumer demand led the company to began creating a “lighter” version, with less of both.

If you want to add calories to your diet, and you’re going to take in that much sugar, why not make it ice cream?

Restaurant calorie counts

Are you skeptical about calorie counts provided on restaurant menus? The most recent issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association reports that they are fairly close to correct.

An examination of the caloric content of food from about 40 fast-food and sit-down restaurants in three states found that overall the stated calories of items on the menus were accurate. they did note, however, that there were substantial inaccuracies that understated or even overstated calorie figures (the latter is kind of a surprise).

The accuracy of calorie counts on menus is important, as about 35 percent of the daily calorie intake in the United States comes from foods bought in restaurants. Also, as part of health care legislation, more and more restaurants will be required to post calorie counts on their menus, beginning in 2012.

The calorie study written up in the journal was done by a group of researchers at Tufts University in Boston. Foods from 42 restaurants, comprising 269 total food items, were ordered as takeout meals and analyzed at a laboratory for calorie content. The restaurants and foods were randomly selected from quick-serve and sit-down restaurants in Massachusetts, Arkansas and Indiana between January and June of 2010.

Of the 269 food items, 40 percent had measured energy contents that were at least 10 calories per portion higher than what was stated on the menu, and 52 percent measured at least 10 calories lower. and 19 percent contained at least 100 calories more per portion higher than stated.

The researchers found more discrepancy between stated and measured calorie content in foods in sit-down restaurants than in quick-serve eateries. but that makes sense, as fast-food restaurant portions tend to be standardized. The study’s authors attributed the difference between stated and actual calories in restaurant items to “poor quality control of portion size.”

Foods that had the highest discrepancy between stated and actual calories averaged 273 more calories per portion than stated.

That’s a lot, if you’re counting calories and trying to stick to 1,500 or 2,000 a day.

Or, as the authors stated in medicalese, “Additional portion control has the potential to facilitate individual efforts to reduce energy intake.”

Clinic wins award

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has named the Cleveland Clinic as one of eight winners of the 2011 Healthy Living Innovation Awards.

The awards are part of Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius’ “Healthy Weight Initiative,” which is part of the department’s focus on preventive health, as well as a way to recognize organizations that implement innovative approaches to address chronic disease and promote healthier lifestyles.

The Clinic was recognized in the Healthy Workplace category for large employers. It recognizes the Clinic’s “Shape up and Go!” program.

Since the program was started in 2009, more than 18,000 Cleveland Clinic employees and almost 3,000 teams have participated in “Shape up & Go!” Employees join forces with their co-workers, forming teams that compete over 12 weeks to see who can walk the most pedometer steps, exercise the most minutes and lose the largest percentage of weight.

This summer, the Clinic also received a grant from Foundation for Healthy Communities to involve area children in a similar program. The Clinic developed the “5 to Go!” program, a tool kit of childhood-obesity prevention strategies, which it then distributed to nearly 8,000 students and 71 elementary school superintendents in Northeast Ohio.

Chemical causes of insomnia are extremely common. the most widespread causes are pharmaceutical medications, including prescription nonprescription (over the counter, OTC) drugs, herbs, and nutritional supplements.

The ingredients in these formulations interact within the body in unpredictable ways. the average prescription medication causes over 70 side effects, including insomnia.

Many medications act alone to disrupt sleep, while others act in unison, combining in vivo to create new biochemical moieties with poorly understood and unrecognized effects. some medications disrupt sleep when they are administered, while others affect it when they are withdrawn.

All medications, herbs, and supplements known to affect sleep should be discontinued. the ingestion of any compound capable of affecting sleep (positively or negatively) should be eliminated (under medical supervision) until the actual effects are determined.

Chemicals can disrupt sleep regardless of the time of day when they are administered. these agents affect the body many hours and sometimes days after their administration.

Metabolism and excretion of these compounds varies widely, depending on the combination of agents being utilized. Even so-called “sub-therapeutic” levels of many compounds still have the potential to produce profound effects.

Not only can the metabolism of these agents vary widely from person to person, but also individuals can react idiosyncratically and unpredictably to different combinations of drugs and herbal supplements.

It is important to remember that most pharmaceuticals and herbs on the market are backed by limited and incomplete safety data. Most medications receive only the bare minimum requirement of study (if any) before approval by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and most serious side effects and “black box warnings” are discovered after the drugs were approved and marketed.

The FDA admits that improper procedures and political lobbying have frequently contributed to the approval of medications that should never have been accepted.

Since the majority of people taking pharmaceuticals engage in polypharmacy, the potential for chemical interactions is extremely important and yet remains virtually ignored. As a result, these agents, singly and in combination, are responsible for many complications and deaths.

This is the fourth of a 10-part series.

Next week: more chemical causes of insomnia.

There are actually a great deal of fjords in the southwestern section of the New Zealand. The tiny valleys that are filled up with the sea water form the fjords and they have been created ages in the past by massive glaciers. These inlets manage to go into towards the middle section of the isle, through the rainforests and the snowy areas. The Fjordland National Park has been organized as a way to shield and care for these kinds of beauties and great landscapes. You may certainly include the Milford Sound into this kind of category.

The fjord has many peaks and cliffs blanketed in glaciers that may be thought of as guardians of this mythic place. Rainforests furthermore make way on top of these hills. The best known summit in the region and also the most significant is Mitre Peak. The wonderfull blue skies seem cut by a bishop’s mitre and that is where the name originates. If we consider every one of the peaks climbing right from the water level, the Mitre is one of the tallest ones, measuring around 1692m. Stirling Falls is one more iconic landmark. The Lion and the Elephant mountains protect the magnificent fall of the water over the complete 155 meters fall. Bowen Falls is another iconic waterfall in Milford Sound. This waterfall is even bigger, raising over 161 meters.

The small gulf will offer an wonderful sight on a relaxed day. The magnificent perspective will reflect on the surface of the liquid and design the unreal view you will look for hours. Bottle nose dolphins are all over the gulf, diving and performing all kinds of tricks. Nevertheless, you might be sufficiently fortunate to spot some crested penguins that can be found on the far off parts of the island. These remote places are guaranteed locations where you can notice them. The fauna includes the New Zealand fur seals that bask in the sunlight prior to they re-enter the water.
Nevertheless, you might be frustrated by several creatures too. The seashores are loaded with hives of sand flies that might possibly harm visitors. These flies feast from our body causing on our skin several unwanted itchy pinches. They feel a lot worse yet that the mosquitoes we are used to at home. Delinquens in many cases are the kea birds and some other alpine birds. In situation you are lacking some plastic items or your meal, pin the consequence on these birds. Plus, the peace of the surroundings is disturbed by the tones these birds produce. Besides, there are trees that frequently fall, generating several threatening tree avalanches. The root base of those trees are not able any longer in order to sustain the slopes, consequently landslides are incredibly generally spotted. Also the gloomy and wet local climate could relatively shiver the awesomeness of the panoramas.

Ignoring the bad aspects, this location is probably the greatest holiday destination in the complete world. Actually there are much more favorable factors as opposed to bad about it. It is clear that mother nature followed its course so far. With time, it managed to design spectacular locations that win over every single person that visits it. This location remains to be among the natural oasis, unharmed by men’s actions.

Fiordland National Park has beauty to provide, the variety of beauty that was patiently and methodically produced by nature itself. The essence of New Zealand’s natural beauty is indeed substantiated by Milford Sound.
